Action learning describes an educational strategy, used in a group setting, that seeks to generate learning from human interaction arising from engagement in the solution of real-time (not simulated) work problems. Joe Raelin, Work-based Learning (Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle, NJ, 2000, p 66).

Action learning is cradled in the very task itself, asking whether that task can be done so that, merely by reflecting upon how it currently seems to be done, the very doing of it supplies the learning generally offered far from the scenes of managerial activity. Action learning is a style of learning which leads to very practical knowledge and skills. It builds understanding as it builds a capacity to act more effectively.

A way of learning by doing space to reflect, to question what they’re at and to challenge their own and other people’s assumptions’ (Pedler and Boutall, 1992)

Based around the ‘set’ - five to eight employees who offer each other advice and encouragement and challenge each other to think and act.Sets normally have a facilitator, who guides discussion, ideally without contributing subject expertise, or ‘programmed knowledge’.

Action learning is best applied to situations where there is no single solution

‘highly situational constantly developing.

By empowering members to tailor their set’s structure and practices, action learning stands to be a more open process and optimally challenging and productive.
