Big data and data protection
This paper is intended to give an overview of the issues as we see them and contribute to the debate on big data and privacy. This is an area in which the capabilities of the technology and the range of potential applications are evolving rapidly and there is ongoing discussion of the implications of big data. Our aim is to ensure that the different privacy risks of big data are considered along with the benefits of big data.

Summary
More data is being created more quickly than ever before. Increasing connectivity and computing power mean that the ways in which data is collected and (re)used are changing rapidly. This is particularly challenging when it involves personal data. The data protection principles, based on EU law, are designed to safeguard individuals’ rights, but are they still fit for purpose in the world of big data? How is the data protection legal framework adapting to this? How should businesses deal with data privacy in this complex environment?
